A starting point for your personal plan

Build the trip around your ability.

Explore three sample trip plans

A first lesson and a surf-focused journey need different planning. These sample stays give you time in the water without losing the rest of the vacation.

4 nights • Your first waves

Jacó or Tamarindo

Choose a coastal base and book an initial coached session.

A good fit for: First-time surfers and groups with different interests.

See how the days could flow

Start with instruction selected for your swimming ability and the day’s conditions. Add another lesson only after discussing progress and fatigue.

6 nights • Time to progress

Nosara / Playa Guiones

Stay in one base with several possible session windows.

A good fit for: Returning learners who want consistency and useful feedback.

See how the days could flow

Plan repeated coaching with rest between sessions. Choose accommodation around the actual lesson meeting point, board arrangements, and shade for companions.

7 nights • Experienced focus

Santa Teresa, Hermosa, or Pavones

Choose one region around your skill level and travel time.

A good fit for: Experienced surfers comfortable making plans around variable conditions.

See how the days could flow

Discuss the break, board, swell exposure, and access with a local surf team. Give remote Pavones its own itinerary rather than a rushed day trip.

Whitewater learner

You are practicing balance and controlled stops in broken waves. Ask for supportive coaching, an appropriate board, and a manageable session.

Catching unbroken waves

You can paddle into waves but want better positioning and technique. Describe your recent experience and usual board when requesting coaching.

Confident in a lineup

You understand priority, currents, and self-managed entry and exit. Local guidance still matters at unfamiliar or more powerful breaks.

Sample trip ideas, not fixed packages. Nights describe time at your chosen bases; travel days may need extra accommodation. Your personal proposal confirms availability, transport, booked experiences, inclusions, and terms.

More planning guidance
DESCRIBE YOUR ABILITY

Be specific about your surfing.

Tell us whether you are learning in whitewater, catching unbroken waves, or confidently managing a lineup. Share when you last surfed and the board you usually ride so we can request suitable coaching.

CHOOSE YOUR PRIORITY

One lesson or a surf trip?

A lesson can fit a coastal vacation. A progression-focused trip benefits from several days in one base. Our starting suggestion is four or more nights when repeat sessions are the main goal.

LET CONDITIONS SET THE TIME

Keep your mornings flexible.

Tides, swell, wind, and crowds influence session timing. Avoid booking every meal and outing around an assumed lesson hour; confirm the plan with your instructor as your session approaches.

CHECK THE LOGISTICS

Keep energy for the water.

Compare board rental with bringing your own, including airline or domestic-flight limits and vehicle space. Confirm storage, transport to the break, and how far you walk from your accommodation.

Useful details for a better day

Arrive prepared.
Enjoy the moment.

01 / WHAT TO WEAR

Choose secure sun protection.

Wear swimwear that stays in place and a comfortable rash guard or sun shirt. Use suitable sunscreen and reapply as directed. Ask your instructor about any footwear or additional equipment for the selected location.

02 / WHAT TO PACK

Keep the beach bag small.

Bring drinking water, a towel, a dry change of clothes, and a bag for wet clothing. Leave valuables at your stay or confirm secure storage before everyone enters the water.

03 / BEFORE THE SESSION

Check your equipment.

Have your instructor check board size, fins, leash, and any damage before entering. Understand rental damage terms and take photos of existing marks when collecting a board.

04 / IN THE WATER

Learn the local rules.

Follow your instructor’s guidance on entry, exit, currents, spacing, and who has priority on a wave. Do not paddle into a crowded or unfamiliar lineup beyond your ability.

05 / LEARNING WELL

Finish with energy left.

Take breaks and tell your instructor when you are tired. A shorter productive session can serve you better than pushing through exhaustion; agree on a manageable pace from the start.

06 / BEYOND THE BOARD

Make the trip work for everyone.

Plan shade, food, and an enjoyable option for non-surfing companions. A surf beach may not be appropriate for casual swimming, especially during the same swell that attracts experienced surfers.

Your questions, answered

A little clarity.
A better escape.

Can I learn if I have never surfed?

Yes, a supported beginner lesson can be considered after checking swimming ability, comfort in the ocean, and participation requirements. Start with instruction suited to you; renting a board alone is not the same experience.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Tell us your swimming ability before booking. Surf lessons take place in moving ocean water; confirm the school’s requirements and discuss any concerns directly with the instructor. A surfboard and leash are not substitutes for swimming ability or a rescue plan.

Which beach should beginners choose?

Jacó, Tamarindo, and Guiones are useful starting areas to discuss. Suitability depends on the exact beach section and conditions that day. An instructor should choose the session; no beach is suitable for every beginner at all times.

Are Hermosa and Pavones suitable for first lessons?

They are presented here as experienced-surfer options. We would explore a different location for a first lesson rather than choose a famous break just for its name.

Are boards and transfers included?

Only when confirmed in your proposal. Ask about board type, rash guards, lesson length, instructor-to-student ratio, transport, and any photography. Multi-day rental and guided surf trips have different inclusions.

Can children take lessons?

Minimum ages and suitability vary by school and conditions. Share each child’s age, swimming ability, and ocean experience so we can check instruction, supervision, and any parent participation requirements.

When is the best time to surf?

For the Pacific coast, December–April is generally the drier planning window; May–November needs more rain flexibility. Neither window guarantees waves suited to you. Choose your dates around your ability, desired coast, and willingness to adapt session times, then let the instructor select the actual beach and conditions.

What happens if conditions are unsuitable?

The instructor may change the time or location, postpone, or cancel. Review the school’s weather, rescheduling, and refund terms before booking. Do not assume a missed session automatically becomes a cash refund.

Can we combine surf with yoga or other experiences?

Yes. We can plan a balanced stay with rest, nature, or yoga around surf sessions. Explore our Costa Rica wellness and restoration escapes or rainforest and wildlife experiences for ideas to combine with surfing. Keep timing flexible and tell us which activity is your main priority. Each added service must be listed in the proposal.

Should I request a private lesson?

A private lesson can give you more individual feedback; a small shared lesson may suit companions of similar ability. Compare instructor-to-student ratio, time in the water, board suitability, and transport. Do not combine different ability levels merely to fill a group.

Will the famous wave at Pavones be running?

The long left-hand wave is the attraction, but it is not guaranteed for your dates. Plan enough time for changing conditions and discuss expectations with a local surf team. If you mainly want reliable first instruction, start by comparing the beginner-oriented areas instead.

Can non-surfing companions enjoy the same trip?

Choose accommodation with comfortable downtime and access to meals, shade, and suitable outings. Match the surf session’s transport and return time with everyone’s plans. A beach selected for waves should not be assumed suitable for casual swimming.
